I've seen Wikis around the net. They are useful because anyone can add to them but that of course brings up credibility. But how credible were our history books?
I signed up for PBWiki and created a wiki. I can see how useful wikis can be for education and business. I don't see any personal use for this right now.
As for teachers "banning" Wikipedia, I think it's the right thing to do. Not because some crazy person might have written something but because it is a very lazy way to do your research.
